Bandai Digital Entertainment Corp. (BDE) Tuesday announced that the company's Pippin @World won a 1996 Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.
The Good Design 1996 judges, a panel of distinguished design professionals, found the Pippin @World design to embody excellence and endurance. The award also acknowledges the Pippin @World design team for charting a new direction for competitive products, such as Internet appliances, in the world marketplace.
The Pippin @World is a multimedia Internet surfing device that brings Internet access, as well as education, entertainment and gaming, CD-ROMs to the family television. Based on technology developed by Apple Computer Inc., the Pippin @World provides a complete Internet experience in a plug-and-play configuration.
There are no operating systems or files for the user to configure. Pippin @World users can browse the Web, exchange e-mail, word process and play computer-style CD-ROMs all on a TV in the comfort of their home.
Features such as the ergonomic hand-held controller that fits hands of all sizes, whether a child's or an adult's, and expansion ports to ensure that the machine can remain state-of-the-art contributed to meeting competition criteria.
The Good Design 1996 jury judged the Pippin @World on the highest aesthetic in terms of innovation, research, form, material, construction, concept, function and utility.
The Good Design Competition and Exhibition, an international industrial and graphic design competition, was organized in Chicago in 1951 with the goal of informing consumers about the merit of modern design. Four and a half decades later, The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design continues to organize the program.
The new goal is to create a revived awareness about contemporary design excellence and honor both products and industry leaders in design and manufacturing.
The Pippin @World will be entered into The Chicago Athenaeum's Permanent Design Collection following the Good Design 1996 Private Preview/Awards Exhibition to be held on Oct. 15.
