Keyspan is now shipping its Software Developer Kit (SDK) for the company's SMART SERIAL 6, the top selling PCI serial communications card for Mac OS computers. The SDK paves the way for third-party developers to migrate existing Nubus communications solutions to today's PCI-based platforms.
Designed for third-party developers and OEMs that want to create customized drivers and onboard applications, the SMART SERIAL 6 SDK responds to the exploding demand for connectivity solutions fueled by the growth of the Internet and other forms of wide area networking. Potential applications include onboard IP routers; gateways for X.25, SNA, or Frame Relay; driver-level add-ons for LocalTalk or GeoPort; and vertical market solutions for the airline, banking, and newspaper publishing industries.
Priced at $1,500, the SMART SERIAL 6 SDK includes a comprehensive description of the SMART SERIAL 6 communications card; full documentation of Seri/OS, Keyspan's onboard operating system optimized for serial communications; a run-time kernel, sample code and interface specifications; and all necessary cards, cables and adaptors.
"Our SMART SERIAL 6 has a powerful communications coprocessor that can be exploited in a variety of ways," noted Mike Ridenhour, president of Keyspan. "This toolkit opens up the SMART SERIAL 6 platform to developers, enabling them to create their own customized communications solutions."
